portland wedding signage - chalkboard wedding signs for tim & alyssa

i LOVED making these chalkboard signs for one of my dear couples, alyssa & tim!

alyssa was so great & sourced all of these beautiful black & white signs from all over town. the white frames always had a lot of texture & personality to them. the black was always chalkboard. combined together, it was a beautiful set of frames that provided consistency & a theme while still having variety + interest among the signs. something great to think about consider when you are gathering pieces for your wedding day.

we kept most of the signs simple, with just white lettering on them. the one sign that did have some pop! was the favor table sign, where they had bags of cherries for their guests to grab - how cute is that!

for these signs, i worked my modern calligraphy in on the top & then paired it with some block letters caps throughout. i love pairing my modern calligraphy script with an all caps script. the modern calligraphy is best for titles & short headlines that you need to grab someone's attention with! and then the block letters are great for balancing out the "bigness" of the calligraphy, and weighing it down with something easy & quick to read.

another stylistic choice i made was to embrace the monoline of the chalkboard pen that i was using for my calligraphy. instead of adding shading in to mimic the nib + ink pen and the thick downstrokes & think upstrokes, i kept it simple & i liked the modern look that the pen gave to these signs.

i utilized my loose modern calligraphy style for these signs. it is more upright than more traditional styles, which tend to lean to the right. my loose modern style tends to have a vertical arch to it (or ie. none) and i add variety + movement with the differing heights of the letters & how they land. while the letters don't all land on the same baseline, they tend to hover around the baseline (either over or under), and balanes out to create the effect of a baseline.

it's an art that i've worked to perfect over the past few years, and i love when i get to see my work out in the wild & away from my studio desk.

thanks for letting me make these fun signs for your special day, tim & alyssa! xo
